At a market stall
Buyer: What is this?
Seller: This is a notebook.
Buyer: What are those?
Seller: Those are phone covers.
Buyer: Are these covers new?
Seller: Yes, they are.

Use your hand before the rule
Hold your phone and say “this phone.” Point to one distant object and say “that chair” or “that door.” Put two pens near you and say “these pens.” Point to two distant objects and say “those chairs.”
Distance and number make the choice
First decide whether the thing is near or farther away. Then decide whether there is one or more than one. Use this for one near thing and that for one farther thing. Use these for several near things and those for several farther things.

The verb follows the number. Ask “What is this?” for one thing and “What are these?” for several things.

Keep the noun and verb in the same number
Not: These is a pen.
Use: This is a pen.
Why: One pen needs this and is.
Not: That are chairs.
Use: Those are chairs.
Why: Several distant chairs need those and are.

Decide near or far, then one or many
Walk, point and name five things
- Choose two near objects.
- Choose one distant object and one distant group.
- Record five sentences without reading.
Finish with one question, such as “What are those?” Your goal is a clear choice, not speed.

Bring is and are back
Say the missing words: This ___ new. Those ___ old. ___ these yours? That ___ my bag. These ___ useful.

Label a real space
Write four small labels for objects near and far. Read each label as a full sentence before removing it.
Two decisions solve it
Choose near or far, then one or many. This and that are singular, so they take is. These and those are plural, so they take are.
