A careful first step with nouns

I can talk about one thing and many things.

میں ایک چیز اور کئی چیزوں کے بارے میں درست بنیادی جملہ بنا سکتا یا سکتی ہوں۔

One bag, two books and three children

This is a bag. There is an apple inside it.

These are two books. Those three children need them.

One man and two women are waiting.

ایک چیز سے پہلے a یا an آ سکتا ہے۔ کئی چیزوں کے نام اکثر s لیتے ہیں۔

Count what is beside you

Find one pen and two books, cups or keys. Say “a pen” for one item, then “two books” or “two keys” for several. The number already tells your listener that the noun is plural.

Listen to the first sound, not the first letter

Use a before one countable noun that begins with a consonant sound: a book, a phone, a university. Use an before a vowel sound: an apple, an engineer, an hour. “University” begins with a y sound, so it takes a. “Hour” begins with a vowel sound because the h is silent, so it takes an.

For more than one regular item, add -s: book becomes books. Some common plurals change: man becomes men, woman becomes women, and child becomes children. Learn these three now because they appear often. This is only a first pass. Later lessons return to articles, so an occasional a or an error should not stop your speaking.

a یا an کا انتخاب پہلے سنائی دینے والے صوتی اثر سے کریں، صرف حرف سے نہیں۔

Articles do not exist in Urdu in the same way

Not: He is teacher.

Use: He is a teacher.

Why: One singular countable job noun needs an article here.

Not: an university

Use: a university

Why: University starts with a y sound.

Connect this, these and the noun

Complete aloud: This is ___ pen. These are two ___. That is ___ apple. Those are three ___. He is ___ teacher.

Check after speaking

a, pens, an, children, a.

Make a tiny inventory

Write five things you have, with a number or a/an. Read the list aloud. Correct only the article and plural today.

A first pass, not a final test

Use a before a consonant sound and an before a vowel sound. Add s for regular plurals. Remember men, women and children. Later modules return to articles, so keep speaking even when the choice needs correction.
