Your one goal
I can say who I am and where I am from.
Use am after I, and are after you.

Read a useful exchange first
Daniel: Hi, Ayesha. I am Daniel. Are you from Lahore?
Ayesha: Yes, I am. You are from London, right?
Daniel: Yes, I am.

Notice what you already know
Say these two lines from the earlier introduction lesson: “My name is Ahmed” and “I’m from Pakistan.” The second line is a short form of I am from Pakistan. Nothing new has been added to its meaning.
Now replace Ahmed and Pakistan with facts about you. Say both lines once before reading the rule.

The small pattern behind the sentences
I means the person speaking. Put am after it: “I am ready.” In everyday speech and informal writing, I am often becomes I’m. The apostrophe shows that one letter has been removed.
You means the person or people listening. Put are after it: “You are early.” The short form is you’re. Do not write your here. Your shows possession, as in “your phone.”
| Person | Full form | Short form | True example |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | I am | I’m | I’m Pakistani. |
| You | You are | You’re | You’re in Module 3. |
A country and a nationality answer different questions. “I am from Pakistan” names the country. “I am Pakistani” names the nationality. Both are complete sentences.

I کے ساتھ am اور you کے ساتھ are آتا ہے۔ I’m اور you’re ان کی مختصر شکلیں ہیں۔
Two mistakes worth stopping early
Use: I am from Karachi.
Why: The subject I always takes am in the present form of be.
Use: You’re from Islamabad.
Why: You’re means you are. Your belongs before a noun.

Build six correct sentences
Say true sentences, then listen back
- Read the model aloud: “I’m Sara. I’m from Pakistan. I’m Pakistani.”
- Replace the name and facts. Record your three true sentences.
- Listen once. Check that every sentence starts with I’m.
Now look at a friend’s name or photo. Say: “You are [name]. You are from [place].” This is practice, so use facts you know rather than guessing about a stranger.

فون پر تین سچے جملے ریکارڈ کریں، پھر سن کر I’m کی آواز چیک کریں۔
Bring back two useful chunks
Complete these aloud without looking back:
- My name ___ Bilal.
- I’m ___ Pakistan.
- Hello. I ___ Bilal.
- You ___ early.
- I ___ Pakistani.
Check after speaking
is, from, am, are, am.
Use it away from this page
Introduce yourself to one person today, or send yourself a voice note. Use your name, city and country in three full sentences. Keep the recording. You will repeat the same task at the module checkpoint and hear the difference.
What now works
Use am after I and are after you. I’m and you’re are normal short forms. “I am from Pakistan” gives a country. “I am Pakistani” gives a nationality. Your next lesson adds he, she, it, we and they.
