The English alphabet has 26 letters. Each letter has a capital form and a small form. A and a are the same letter. B and b are the same letter.

Capital and small forms belong together: The English Alphabet

The name of B sounds like bee, but the first sound in book is shorter. For now, learn the names. The next lesson connects letters with word sounds.

Say this in groups: A B C D E, then F G H I J. Continue with K L M N O, P Q R S T, and U V W X Y Z. Small groups reduce memory pressure.

Capital letters start names and sentences. Small letters appear more often inside words. Write your own name with one capital first letter, then small letters.

In British English, Z is called zed. American speakers often say zee. This course uses zed but helps you recognise both.

Three traps for Urdu-script readers

Do not call W “double V”. Its English name is double-u.

Do not treat I and l as one shape. Capital I and small l may look similar in some fonts. Check the word around them.

Do not expect alphabetical order to show pronunciation. It only helps you find and organise words.
