Astra Recorder Setup: Record Android Calls Without an Accessibility Service

MetaCyberGuru video guide

Set up call recording on Android without switching on an Accessibility service, using a one time ADB pairing instead.

What this video helps you do

Set up call recording on Android without switching on an Accessibility service, using a one time ADB pairing instead. The recording runs from a clean install through to a recorded call, so you can watch first and then use the notes below as a checklist rather than trying to remember every screen.

Android 10 closed the call audio path that third party apps had been using, and Google’s developer policy later prohibited using the Accessibility API for call recording. Most recorders still ask you to turn that service on, it stays on afterwards, and a number of banking and payment apps refuse to run while it is. Astra activates a small helper once over wireless debugging instead, using the companion app ADB Nexus. No Accessibility service is involved at any point, and no root.

Three details to verify

  • Scroll the whole permission list and confirm what is actually being asked for.
  • After setup, check that the helper reports connected before you rely on it.
  • Make one short test call and listen back to confirm both voices on your own phone.

Keep the result with the device and app version you tested. Helper connected is not the same thing as audio captured, and treating them as the same is how people end up with a long recording of only their own voice.

Use the feature in the right context

Whether both sides of a call are captured depends on the phone, the Android version, the carrier and the calling app. Call recording needs Android 12 or newer and the phone’s main user profile. Voice memos work with no setup at all.

Recordings stay on the device. They can be encrypted with device keystore keys, the app can sit behind a four digit PIN, and nothing is uploaded anywhere unless you set up a backup pointing at storage you own.

Recording laws vary by country and by state. Record only where it is lawful where you are, and get consent when the law asks for it.
