How to Delete or Deactivate Instagram Safely

Reviewed: August 12, 2026

You can delete an Instagram account from a phone or computer through Meta’s Accounts Centre. Before confirming, make sure you selected the correct profile, export anything you want to keep and understand the difference between permanent deletion, temporary deactivation and simply removing an account from Accounts Centre.

This guide follows Meta’s current help documentation. Menu labels can move as the app changes, so use the linked official instructions if your screen differs.

Delete, deactivate and unlink are different actions

ActionWhat it doesChoose it when
Delete accountStarts permanent removal of the selected Instagram account and its profile contentYou have exported needed data and intend to leave permanently
Temporarily deactivateHides the profile, photos, comments and likes until you reactivate by logging inYou want a reversible break
Remove from Accounts CentreDisconnects an account from the group of linked Meta accountsYou want to stop connected experiences, not delete Instagram
Delete the appRemoves Instagram from one deviceYou only want the app off that phone

Uninstalling the app does not delete the account. Removing Instagram from Accounts Centre is also not the same as selecting “Delete account” under account ownership and control.

Before you delete your Instagram account

  1. Confirm the username. Accounts Centre can contain several profiles. Write down the exact account you intend to remove.
  2. Export your information. After deletion, you will not have access to Instagram’s export tool for that account.
  3. Save business assets. Transfer any legitimate responsibilities for linked Pages, ad accounts, creator partnerships or shared resources.
  4. Review sign-in dependencies. If you used Instagram to sign into another service, add a separate login method there first.
  5. Check subscriptions and promotions. End or document any active commitment through the appropriate billing provider.
  6. Tell essential contacts. Give trusted contacts another way to reach you if the account is your main channel.
  7. Secure the account. If deletion follows suspected compromise, change the password and review active sessions before making an irreversible decision.

If you are reacting to harassment, impersonation or a hacked account, deletion may not be the best first step. Save evidence, use Instagram’s reporting or recovery process and involve an appropriate authority when there is a credible threat.

How to export your Instagram information first

Meta places data export in Accounts Centre:

  1. Open Instagram settings.
  2. Select Accounts Centre.
  3. Open Your information and permissions.
  4. Select Export your information, then Create export.
  5. Choose the correct Instagram profile.
  6. Choose export to a device or, where offered, an external service.
  7. Select the information, date range, format and media quality you need.
  8. Start the export and follow the notification when it is ready.

Large, high-quality video exports need more storage. Meta says a device export can take time to prepare and is available for a limited download window after completion. Do not submit the deletion request until you have downloaded and opened the archive.

Verify the export

An export request is not the same as a verified backup. Extract the archive on a trusted device and spot-check photos, videos and account records that matter to you. Keep the archive encrypted if it contains private messages or personal information, and delete extra copies from shared computers.

How to permanently delete Instagram in Accounts Centre

  1. Sign in to the Instagram account you intend to delete.
  2. Open Instagram Settings.
  3. Select Accounts Centre.
  4. Open Personal details.
  5. Select Account ownership and control.
  6. Choose Deactivation or deletion.
  7. Select the correct Instagram account.
  8. Choose Delete account, then Continue.
  9. Read the confirmation screens, verify the profile again and complete the requested authentication.

Do not rush the final screens. If Accounts Centre lists both Facebook and Instagram profiles, selecting the wrong one can affect a different account.

What happens after the request?

Meta’s help page says that, after the applicable cancellation period, the account and information are permanently deleted and cannot be retrieved. It describes 30 days for many users but notes that the number of days can vary by region. The deletion process can take longer to complete in backup systems.

Use the date shown on your own confirmation screen as the controlling date. If you change your mind, follow Instagram’s on-screen cancellation process before that deadline. Do not assume an old tutorial’s timeline applies to your region or account.

How to temporarily deactivate Instagram

If you want a break rather than permanent removal, follow the same path:

  1. SettingsAccounts CentrePersonal details;
  2. Account ownership and controlDeactivation or deletion;
  3. select the Instagram account;
  4. choose Deactivate account and continue;
  5. re-enter the password and complete the confirmation.

Temporary deactivation hides the profile and related activity until you log in again. Meta currently states that an Instagram account can only be deactivated once a week. If you only need privacy from particular people, a private account, blocking or other audience controls may be a more targeted option.

What to do when deletion is not available

You cannot log in

Use Instagram’s account-recovery flow. A disabled-account notice, forgotten password and hacked account are different problems. Follow the specific message shown in the app rather than using a third-party “recovery” service.

The account was hacked

Use Instagram’s official hacked-account route, secure the associated email account, change reused passwords and review logged-in devices. Do not pay someone who claims they can access Meta’s internal systems.

The menu path looks different

Update the app, try Accounts Centre on a desktop browser and open Meta’s current help page. Regional and staged interface changes can alter labels. Avoid unofficial links that ask you to enter an Instagram password outside an Instagram or Meta-owned page.

You manage more than one profile

Pause at the profile-selection screen. Confirm the username and profile picture. If the account supports a business, verify ownership of connected assets before proceeding.

Security and privacy after leaving

  • Revoke Instagram access from third-party apps that no longer need it.
  • Remove saved Instagram passwords from shared browsers and password stores you do not control.
  • Keep your email account protected with a unique password and multi-factor authentication.
  • Retain deletion confirmation only as long as needed and store it securely.
  • Search for impersonating accounts if your public identity is at risk.
  • Remember that content other people independently saved or reposted is not controlled by deleting your profile.

Deleting one social account does not automatically delete information held by unrelated services or other users. Review each service separately.

Decision checklist

Choose permanent deletion only when all answers are yes:

  • I selected the correct username.
  • I downloaded and opened the export I need.
  • I transferred necessary business access.
  • I replaced Instagram-based sign-ins elsewhere.
  • I understand the cancellation deadline shown to me.
  • I prefer permanent deletion over temporary deactivation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I delete Instagram from the mobile app?

Meta says you can permanently delete an account from a phone or computer through Accounts Centre. The exact route may differ by app version.

Does uninstalling Instagram delete my account?

No. Uninstalling removes the app from that device; the Instagram account remains.

Can I recover a deleted Instagram account?

You may be able to cancel a deletion request during the period displayed for your account. After permanent deletion, Meta says the information cannot be retrieved. Regional timing can vary.

Should I deactivate instead?

Deactivate if you want a reversible break. Delete only if you intend permanent removal and have completed the backup and access checks.

Will removing Instagram from Accounts Centre delete it?

No. Removing a linked account from Accounts Centre disconnects it; permanent deletion is a separate action under Deactivation or deletion.
